The Nine Stages of Shamata

As we begin and then develop our quiet sitting meditation (called Shinay in Tibetan, or Shamata in Sanskrit), we may wonder how to gauge our success in practice: how do we know our meditation practice is effective? How do we know what to do with obstacles? How can we make use of the mindfulness and alertness we develop in quiet sitting meditation?

By using an ancient Tibetan diagram showing the Nine Stages of Shamata, this program will describe how progress is made in meditation and how the benefits of meditation manifest in our daily lives.

Tong-Len

Lama Tom chose the topic of tong-len as a follow-up to Lama Kathy's retreat topic of shamata. He passed out printouts on tong-len from lamakathy.net, and we took turns reading paragraphs and discussing.
